Top 10 Back-to-School Technology Must-Haves

Let’s face it, I don’t know anyone who’s used a paper notebook as their primary source of notetaking since middle school. In our ever-evolving world, technology has become a necessity in high school and college.

With back-to-school season in full force, we’ve compiled a packing list chock-full of all the latest and greatest gadgets to help make your academic experience as smooth as possible. Check out these Amazon finds for some back-to-school hidden gems!

Digital Camera

My personal favourite investment, a digital camera, is always one of the first things on any of my packing lists, whether it be for moving into my dorm or going out on the town. High school and college go by in a flash, but the pictures and memories stay forever. Plus, being the friend with the camera certainly has major perks: just holding a digicam adds to the social atmosphere!

This specific camera runs for $100, but almost any digital camera will work. Common choices include the Canon G7X, Sony Cyber-shot and Panasonic Lumix brands, but these are on the pricier side. Though a digital camera isn’t a necessity, it definitely improves the quality of life and was a purchase I never regretted. In comparison to a more professional camera, digital cameras are cheaper and easier to carry, creating a more social and fun experience!

iPad

Of all the products in the Apple ecosystem, the iPad has gained popularity for its ease and compatibility. iPads have become the most popular method of note-taking and sync well with devices that many students already use, like iPhones and Mac computers. Many students even choose to opt out of purchasing a computer in lieu of an “iPad kid” life. Outside of class, iPads are great not only for homework but for texting friends and playing games.

For $300, students can pick up an iPad in a customized colour, useful for both productivity and entertainment.

Apple Pencil

With a brand new iPad, consider investing in an Apple Pencil, the paired stylus for use on many note-taking software. Especially for artistic majors, an Apple Pencil aims to mimic the real feel of a pencil on paper and is a more precise touch than a finger. Regardless of major, the ability to write on an iPad is a major timesaver when taking notes and syncing them across devices. 

A classic white Apple Pencil runs for $19, but an $11 upgrade allows colour customization. Other options include purchasing a pack of replacement tips with the pen.

Power Bank

Regardless of student status, a power bank is hands down one of the best investments someone can make. An on-the-go charger for your phone can save the day! Considering its use in the real world, it is well worth the price. Including three different outlet types (USB-C, Lightning and Micro USB), these come in handy for virtually any device one could own. Just be careful, you might become too popular with all your friends asking to borrow your charger!

This portable power bank runs for $36, but I’ve yet to go wrong with any of the brands I’ve invested in.

Portable Speaker

School isn’t just about getting good grades. Building a social life and connecting with great people is equally important, if not even more so. Bringing a portable speaker to the function instantly sets the vibe, whether it be a party or a simple dorm get-together. Having background music eliminates awkward silence and, through the power of music, can bring people together! Consider investing in a waterproof speaker for pool parties or the shower.

Noise-Cancelling Headphones

This just in: headphones aren’t just for the matcha-drinking tote bag-wearing performative male. They also pair great with the average student! Specifically, any pair of noise-cancelling earphones is typically the best investment, whether it be to ignore a loud roommate or walk down the halls to your favourite tunes. Trust me, the decision to purchase a noise-cancelling set is a no-brainer. At the very least, they give you privacy and rare moments to yourself, something that is needed in a college dorm.

Scientific Calculator

For all our STEM majors, taking a calculus class with just pen and paper can be a bit challenging. A scientific calculator is a crucial school supply for almost every math class. Ideally, try to purchase one with colour settings for an easier graphing experience.

A classic TI-84 calculator is an $80 investment, but one you’ll be sure to get good use out of throughout high school, college and beyond. A classic black one is the cheapest option, but you can also purchase colourful ones for a higher price.

Extension Cords

Though one may not think it, an extension cord will become an everyday use at home or in a dorm. Extension cords are often at the top of the packing list for many freshmen due to the lack of outlets in dorms. Ensure you purchase one with a surge protector to prevent fires and comply with college safety guidelines.

Smart Watch

Especially as students move away from home for the first time and have control over their diets and lifestyles, students must learn how to regulate and track their health. Smart watches make it much easier to track these stats and keep yourself accountable. Apple Watches and other Smart Watches can also connect with your mobile phone to receive calls, respond to texts and check apps right from your wrist. 

The original price of the Alexa-built-in Smart Watch is $220, but it is on sale for as low as $30.

AirTag

AirTags are a popular location tracker that users tend to purchase in packs. AirTags can attach to anything, ensuring that you will never lose your personal items or, worse, get them stolen on campus. Common places that students can put their AirTags include wallets, backpacks, luggage and inside their cars.
