Follow the Playlist on SpotifyEminem has remained consistent with the controversial raps as he releases his latest album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grace). The 51-year-old rapper has made the album as a final appearance of his alter-ego Slim Shady as he uses gravestone iconography in a “graveyard album trailer”.
As Eminem puts his Shady persona to rest with a blow of mercy (coup de grace), here are the most controversial lyrics by Eminem.
‘Guity Conscience’ (1999)
The lyrics: “Yo this girl’s only fifteen years old, you shouldn’t take advantage of her, it’s not fair, yo look at her b*sh, does it got hair? F*ck this b*tch right here on the spot, bare.” [1:50]
The song faced criticism from many for using explicit language, however, critics gave mixed opinions. “I remember the Animal House when the girl passes out and the guy was about to r*pe her. He had a devil on one shoulder and the angel on the other shoulder saying don’t do it,” said Eminem, defending this song to the Los Angeles Times in 2010. “We did the same thing, only with a little more graphic detail.”
‘Kim’ (2000)
The lyrics: “There’s a four-year-old little boy, laying dead with a slit throat in your living room. Haha!” [2:08]
According to Ranker, this line was bleeped from the song and the rest of the song is criticized like many other Eminem songs for promoting violence. This particular one describes a fight between a couple in which the husband ends up killing the wife, her lover, and the lover’s son.
‘Unaccommodating’ (2020)
The lyrics: “But I’m contemplating yelling, ‘Bombs away’ on the game. Like I’m outside of an Ariana Grande concert waiting.” [2:10]
In 2017, a suicide bomber, Salman Abedi, killed 22 civilians outside an Ariana Grande concert at Manchester Arena, according to the Ranker, the mayor of Manchester, Andy Burnham said, “This is unnecessarily hurtful and deeply disrespectful to the families and all those affected.”
However, Eminem had a proper reply to justify his writing.
“This album was not made for the squeamish, he said, if you are easily offended or unnerved at the screams of bloody murder, this may not be the collection for you. Certain selections have been designed to shock the conscience, which may cause positive action.”
‘My Name Is’ (1999)
“99 per cent of my life, I was lied to, I just found out my mom does more dope than I do,” he raps, “When I was little, I used to get so hungry I would throw fits How you gonna breastfeed me, Mom? You ain’t got no t*ts” [1:54]
According to Ranker, Eminem’s mother, Debbie Mathers, disliked her son always dissing her and therefore she sued him for slander for $10 million.
Eminem’s lawyer said, “It is merely the result of a lifelong strained relationship between him and his mother.”
In the end, Debbie received $1,600 and Eminem spoke about it in “Without Me” (2002). “I just settled all my lawsuits, f*ck you, Debbie,” Eminem raps. [1:31]
‘Brain Damage’ (1999)
The lyrics: “Way before my baby daughter Hailie I was harassed daily by this fat kid named DeAngelo Bailey, an eighth grader who acted obnoxious, ’cause his father boxes so every day he’d shove me in the lockers.” [1:29]
After Eminem rapped about his bully, DeAngelo Bailey sued the rapper for slander for $ 1 million. However, the judge dismissed the case with a rap of her own.
“Mr. Bailey complains that his rap is trash so he’s seeking compensation in the form of cash. Bailey thinks he’s entitled to some monetary gain because Eminem used his name in vain,” the rap says. “The lyrics are stories no one would take as fact they’re an exaggeration of a childish act.”
‘Antichrist’ (2024)
In his latest album, ‘The Death of Slim Shady,’ (2024) Eminem is still not able to escape controversies. According to Ranker, a lyric In ‘Antichrist‘ (2024) references Diddy beating Cassie Ventura.
In 2024, a CCTV video of a hotel was released in which Sean “Diddy” Combs is beating his then-girlfriend in 2016.
Eminem censored Ventura’s name on all versions of the song. “Next idiot ask me is getting his a** beat Worse than Diddy did [redacted].”
‘Houdini’ (2024)
The lyrics: “If I was to ask for Megan Thee Stallion if she would collab with me, would I really have a shot at a feat? Ha!” [0:50]
The wordplay of “shot at a feat” is perceived as a step too far because it referenced Megan Thee Stallion getting shot in the foot by Tory Lanez in 2020 as many fans expressed displeasure at the wordplay of a serious incident.
American Secret Service investigated Eminem for rapping about Ivanka Trump in ‘Framed.’
‘Framed’ (2017)
The lyrics: “Donald Duck’s on there’s a Tonka Truck in the yard but dog, how the f*ck is Ivanka Trump in the trunk of my car?” [1:40]
It was confirmed in 2019 that Eminem was interviewed by the Secret Service after threats he allegedly made towards Donald Trump and his daughter, Ivanka. A TMZ had tipped them.
‘The Ringer.’ (2018)
“Cause Agent Orange just sent the Secret Service to meet in person to see if I really think of hurtin’ him or ask if I’m linked to terrorists I said, ‘Only when it comes to ink and lyricists.” [5:07]
Controversies Always Follow Eminem…
But time and again he has made it clear that he is not letting that change the way he raps, reflecting a trait of an honest artist.
