The highly anticipated 2024 Met Gala took place this past Monday at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, showcasing a beautiful array of creativity and glamour reflecting this year’s dress code: “Garden of Time.” Although many celebrities were seen in attendance, certain MET Gala veterans like Blake Lively, Rihanna, and Billie Eilish missed the event this year to the disappointment of some more hardcore fans. However, many exciting first-timers walked the carpet this year. The following – in no particular order – are our top ten favourite debuts at the 2024 MET Gala.

Taylor Russell

Canadian actor and Bones and All star Taylor Russell made her MET debut with a stunning dress made by Loewe. She wore a custom high-neck wood-painted bodice with fine details of the natural and organic arrangement of lines, swirls, knots, and grains. She paired the look with a silky white floor-length skirt with a thigh-high slit.

Her relationship with Loewe has been going on for quite some time as she established herself as the muse for designer Jonathan Anderson during the opening of the brand’s spring 2023 show in Paris. Since then, she has become a prominent figure for Loewe, receiving the title of global ambassador and starring in a campaign.

With her remarkable acting skills and natural charisma, she has quickly become a rising star in the entertainment industry. Recently she wrapped up a month-long viewing of The Effect, a play by the British playwriter Lucy Prebble in New York City.

Mona Patel stole the show with her beautiful dress designed by Iris Van Herpen. Patel is an entrepreneur from India. After finishing her studies there, she moved to the States in 2003 where she started multiple businesses in various fields including tech, retail, and healthcare. She is also known for her non-profit, Couture for Cause, which aims to create a better future for girls, as stated on the website.

Styled by Law Roach, she was seen wearing a cream-coloured form-fitting dress designed to look like a butterfly with its long-frill train. However, it was the arm cuffs that truly stole the show as it was mechanical butterflies that flapped its wings as she made her way through the red carpet.

Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who recently took home the Oscar for best supporting actress in The Holdovers at the 96th Academy Awards, graced the red carpet at the MET for the first time in a beautiful custom denim dress made by GAP. It featured a long train with all shades of blues.

The actress has been seen making her mark in the entertainment world from her roles in The Idol and Disney’s Only Murders in the Building starring Selena Gomez. She has also been vocal about important social issues, including representation and diversity in the entertainment industry, using her voice to promote inclusivity and equality leaving fans enamoured by her work and creativity.

Mimicking a sand sculpture, South African singer Tyla was seen gracing the carpet in a Balmain dress made from sand. The dress was made to fit her like a glove and fanned out from the knees down – giving a mermaid look. She paired the look with an hourglass “purse” that tied the look together and embraced the theme of the night. Tyla is known to bring unique looks to big events.

The singer is well known and loved for her hit song Water which became the trending song on TikTok and led to her winning a Grammy this year for Best African Music Performance.

Although Ed Sheeran has been in the entertainment world for quite some time, this year marked his first time attending the Met Gala. The singer was seen wearing a light blue Stella McCartney suit – a complete 180 from his usual look of hoodies and jeans.

While the Shape of You singer’s red carpet ensemble wasn’t the standout of the evening, it maintained a sophisticated simplicity with the choice of the blue suit. Sheeran attended the event with his wife, Cherry Seaborn, who was also celebrating her birthday.

Pamela Anderson

Canadian actress and model Pamela Anderson made her debut on the MET Gala carpet in a trailing beige gown by designer Oscar De La Renta, accessorized with a feather hairpiece and draping lab-grown diamond Pandora necklaces (a fashion campaign she was recently the face of). Anderson is known for posting photos on her Instagram in her gardens on Vancouver Island, giving off ethereal looks and with fairytale-esque energy – a perfect fit for the wistful theme of the evening. She teamed up with famed make-up artist Pat McGrath and stylist Orlando Pita to turn out the perfect look.

Anderson first rose to fame for her role in the 1989 series Baywatch, as well as her time modelling for Playboy Magazine.

Greta Lee

Greta Lee

American actress Greta Lee is another Loewe darling this year on the carpet, showing up in a sheer lace gown, complete with floral appliques and a structured bodice. Her look was complete with rosy-cheeked, dewy makeup, a look that make-up artist Nina Park said complimented the weightless look, mimicking the colours of springtime. This was contrasted with a boyishly cut wig, which hairstylist Jenny Cho said added some edge to the rest of the feminine, weightless look.

Lee recently starred in the 2023 drama/romance Past Lives, which was nominated for Best Picture at the 96th Academy Awards.

Colman Domingo

Colman Domingo

Actor Colman Domingo made his debut in Willy Chavarria suit, honouring some of his brilliant peers that came before him. Domingo says he was honouring late actors Chadwick Boseman and André Leon Talley – who have both attended the MET Gala previously in swooping, caped looks similar to Domingo’s. His suit consisted of a white jacket, with a cape draping to the floor, on top of wide-leg black trousers. He was also seen carrying a bouquet of white calla lilies, which typically represent resurrection and rebirth.

Domingo is known for a variety of his roles. He played a recurring character on HBO’s Euphoria from 2019-2022. Most recently, he starred in the 2023 film Rustin, which earned him a nomination for Best Actor at the 96th Academy Awards.

Wisdom Kaye

The only influencer on this list – and perhaps the most deserved – is Wisdom Kaye. Kaye made his debut in a floor-length red coat, and matching trousers, adorned with a large floral applique. However, the entire look seems to have been singed at the edges – either with fire or some other destructive force, we don’t know. The dress code was based on a 1962 short story by J.G. Ballard, also named The Garden of Time. Themes in this story include those of destruction and the concept of fleeting beauty – which we think Kaye captured spectacularly.

Kaye is known for posting extravagant outfits on his TikTok, which landed him collaborations with brands like Coach, on the runway for Robert Wun Couture (who did his MET Gala look), and on Forbes’ 30 under 30 list in 2023.

Ayo Edebri

Ayo Edebri

American actress and internet darling Ayo Edebri walked the carpet in a backless floral gown by Loewe, also designed by Jonathan Anderson. The dress is full of ombre floral appliques descending to the floor. A floral hairpin to tie back her sleek updo completed the look.

Edebri has been making a huge splash in movies and television the past year, knocking out several big roles. She co-led the 2023 queer comedy Bottoms alongside fellow MET Gala attendee Rachel Sennott. Perhaps her biggest role recently – and maybe the biggest of her career – is her supporting role in the Emmy and Golden Globe-winning comedy/drama series The Bear.
