KAAZE – Hot Techno, Headline Tours and Hit Remixes

John Dahlback - Blink (KAAZE Remix)

KAAZE has been rising rapidly through the ranks of the music industry, making a name for himself through his style-varied releases and electrifying live sets. Recently reaching #48 in DJ Mag’s “Top 100 DJs”, his highest position yet, it seems the only way is up for him within the world of electronic dance music.

The Swedish producer, DJ and songwriter offers a multi-faceted catalogue ranging from the alluring, high-energy rework of Nelly Furtado’s “Maneater” with Luciana, to his hard-hitting, percussion heavy remix of Calvin Harris and Sam Smith’s “Desire”. His production prowess and songwriting skills have seen him rack up collaborations alongside iconic names like David Guetta, Steve Aoki, KSHMR, Tiesto, Hardwell, and even worldwide pop royalty such as Britney Spears. One recent highlight would be “Blink”, an entrancing, menacing, mammoth-sounding interpretation of the classic John Dahlback track – out now via Smash The House Records

An innovator of the “Hot Techno” sound, a new form blending punchy percussion and deep distortion with melodic moments, his banging beats have taken him to some renowned stages such as Ministry of Sound, Ibiza’s Amnesia, and even the mainstage at EDC. And the adventure’s only just beginning – with his debut North American and Canadian “RESONANCE” tour underway, and a string of summertime sets confirmed, Funktasy caught up with the hot-techno heavyweight on his musical journey and what’s coming next…

What’s an ideal day like for KAAZE?

The ideal day for KAAZE on tour is to keep things as intense and hectic as possible. I work best when I’m on the go all the time. When I’m home I’m not KAAZE. Then I go into ‘Mick mode’ who’s a father and husband. But the ideal day for Mick is a fine combo between studio time, gym time, some golf and being with my family as much as possible.

Congratulations on your remix of David Guetta and Sia’s ‘Beautiful People.’ How did you approach putting your own stamp on the track?

When I do remixes like this, I like to only keep the vocals of the original and do a totally different spin on the track. The only difference on this remix is that I made the last drop a bit more melodic than normally.

Tell us about your music journey and how it all began?

I started producing 19 years ago but I created KAAZE back in 2014. I come from a very underground sound before KAAZE so my approach to my recent sound was my way of going back to my roots.

What was Sweden’s dance music scene like when you were cutting your teeth as a DJ?

I’ve actually never played a proper KAAZE set in my home country so it’s hard for me to say. Sweden doesn’t have the biggest dance scene in terms of clubs but Swedes do go hard on festivals in the summer.

You are coming to Toronto at the end of the month of 30th May performing at DPRTMNT. What’s in store for the show?

I’m so stoked for my show in Toronto. People seem excited. I’ve prepared a lot of brand new music that I’m gonna try out for the first time.

You were only in Montreal a few weeks ago for your RESONANCE debut Canada/USA tour. Did Canada’s party people make this a special experience for you? Any stand-out moments?

To be honest Canada has one of the best crowds. The show at New City Gas was mental! I had such a good time with Will Sparks who joined the show as well.

You are the pioneer of the “Hot Techno” genre. Tell us more about it.

Hot Teknō is my little baby in terms of community. At first it was just a silly phrase I started using online but my fans loved it and stuck with it. I would say hot Teknō is a sexy version of today’s Peak Techno. A bit more groove but still mainstage.

What is one memorable milestone in your career so far?

I have so many milestones throughout the years, both big and small but in the end I’m just grateful to be in a position where I can live off my music and support and give my family a good life. Everything on top of that is just a bonus for me.

Can you share any upcoming projects, collaborations, or future goals?

As many of my fans know, I have TOO much unreleased music. I make roughly 10-20 new demos every week and I always get too excited to showcase and try them out. So right now, I’m scheduling the songs me and my team believe in the most. The next release is called “Reach Out” and has a crazy hype at the moment so I’m super excited.

Who is your dream artist to collaborate with and why?

I would say my dream collaboration at the moment is with French artist Stromae. I’m such a big fan and I can only imagine how he would sound on a proper Hot Teknō beat. When it comes to DJs, I would say David Guetta since he’s the one who made me want to become a DJ as a youngster.

Where do you see KAAZE in 5 years?

I don’t try to look too much into the future nor predict what to come for me. I’m just enjoying every moment of my life right now. If people still enjoy my music in 5 years, I’ll be blessed enough.
