The Spirit of Vinyl

Music consumption has undergone radical evolution in the past century, from the warm resonance of vinyl to the cozy convenience provided by streaming services. Music consumption has evolved and shifted, with these changes being far more than just technological; they are also social, revealing how individuals interact with art and their surrounding community. The journey from vinyl to streaming reflects widespread changes in how people interact with music and how global advancements such as these affect cultural values such as convenience, accessibility, and identity.

1980

In the 1980s, vinyl was the dominant format of music consumption, with record collections and albums creating a culture through each album released. The age of vinyl was a time to romanticize; picture the warm hum of a large record from a stacked collection spinning round and round on a dusty old record player while sipping a neat whisky on a loveseat with a special someone. To this day, consuming music via vinyl encompasses this special, almost ethereal experience.

Listening to vinyl is an album-by-album listing process. First, one listens to one side of the record; then, after that side putters to a close, they flip and carefully listen to the rest of the album. This process of flipping and flopping the records is repeated till all the records are done. Through vinyl, a listener experiences the album in the order the artist wanted, undertaking a complete musical experience that encompasses patiently listening and committing to being transformed and teleported into a new world. In the day of vinyl, an album was a musical experience and a lucrative business; each record was a piece of art that produced profit from each sale. The practice of collecting records, each with its own unique artwork, became immensely popular, marking an essential time in culture and society.

Surviving Changes

Vinyl has always remained an unshakable staple throughout history, outliving CDs, MP3s, and iPods. Vinyl might truly be the most culturally significant way to consume music. While there are ever-evolving ways of consuming music that provide the potential for new sources of income, vinyl is a tried and true profit. Purchasing a tangible product is a large way artists and labels make money, and in the age of streaming, vinyl is a product with an aesthetic. Owing to their high profitability, records greatly boosted the revenue of the music industry in the early 1970-80’s. Vinyl empowered artists with broader financial freedom to produce new and innovative forms of music. Moreover, curating and cultivating moods and records is a singularly special experience that is strongly embedded into the fabric of music history.

The evolution of music and the proliferation of digital technology have created a new wave of music consumption and provided endless access to music of all genres. Accessibility is the new norm in music consumption, with digital consumption methods—streaming, mixtapes, and downloading— constantly evolving. Through digitization, the patterns and style of listening have shifted, and the interchanging and accessibility of switching songs so frequently have created a new wave of music intake. The age of listening to a full album is dying; the ideology of the digital age is being faster than ever before. Although listing patterns have drastically changed, and there are so many alternate ways of music consumption, the presence of vinyl is unwavering.

Long Story Short…

Vinyl isn’t just that old dusty collection your grandparents have at the back of their garage; its spirit is eternal. The aesthetic vibe and culture of collecting records are a unique part of their allure. Music consumption through vinyl records, which involved carefully selecting the order of the tracks and appreciating each carefully crafted artwork, rightfully treated music as a precious art form; that is why vinyl is such an integral aspect of musical culture. While accessibility in music consumption is essential, mishandling its incorporation can dilute the potency of a message in an artist’s music. As the music industry continues to revolutionize and reinvent the way we listen to music, it is imperative to recognize and honor the spirit and culture of records in today’s world.
