Canadian musicians have been dominating the hip hop and pop charts all over the world in the past few years, ushering in a new era of Canadian music. To those who may criticize Canada for its lack of apparent music scene, internationally Canadian music has done some impressive numbers. As much as artists may have struggled domestically, those that have gone big have seen huge sales, popularity, and opportunities.
When discussing Canadian music, one must acknowledge that there is no bigger artist in contemporary hip hop right now than Drake. Throughout the past few years, Drake has seen massive success with the mixtape If You’re Reading This, It’s Too Late , the joint mixtape What a Time to Be Alive , multiple singles, and his most recent album Views . Through successfully being able to build his brand outside of Canada and continuing to release a series of products that appeal to his growing customer base, Drake has been able to pave the way for other artists.
At the top of that list is no doubt The Weeknd, who has seen much chart success in the past year based around his Beauty Behind the Madness album and with Can’t Feel My Face becoming a massive hit. Promising for his future, The Weeknd still feels new to the party and is still rolling out his vision. As he continues to set up new releases, it will be interesting to see who comes next down the pike after him as that Toronto-based hip hop scene continues to flourish.
Though it may be hard to see for some Canadians, Justin Bieber has continued to remain as one of the most beloved yet hated Canadian artists. Justin Bieber’s sales numbers continue to be massive and he has continued to dominate his category internationally with sold out shows, hit releases, and much press. Beiber’s collaboration with Jack u and his forays into the world of EDM led him to his first Billboard #1 in What Do You Mean , showing that he continues to be on the rise.
Canada has also seen much success in the teen category around the world with talents such as Carly Rae Jepsen still doing big numbers alongside newcomers such as Alessia Cara and Shawn Mendes, all making waves with respective releases in the past two years.
Though Canadian music experts continue to shill out underground Canadian indie artists and while Canadian rock radio continues to push bands from the 1990s, artists such as Drake have not always gone recognized for representing Canadian music internationally. Through the work of these types of artists, there is a pathway now for many artists to strike big in the United States and around the world.
The examples don’t just stop here either. In the last ten years, there have been massive hits internationally from Canadian artists such as the classic pop of Michael Buble, the indie stylings of Feist, and the festival-headlining performances and Grammy-award winning Arcade Fire. That doesn’t even mention the continued success of artists such as Leonard Cohen, Diana Krall, and other prominent musicians that have been long-established.
Canada has the opportunity to continue to dominate the pop charts and the music world. To do so however will require these artists to have continued financial support and the resources they need to succeed. We need to invest in Canadian artists, allowing them to produce the product required to compete domestically as well as in markets in the United States, the UK, and around the world.
